Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
I am somewhat surprised that everyone has said Messi. Ronaldo has had a very prolific year, scoring over 40 goals, assisting many, many more, and showcasing his outstanding skills. In my opinion, Ronaldo deserves to be the best player in the world at the moment, however, Messi will surpass him very, very soon.

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
I cannot really argue that, as it's your opinion, so I will just say forty-odd goals in a season means a great player. Combine that with his great dribbling skills, dead-ball ability, heading etc. I would say he is the best in the world.

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
Messi can actually head the ball with his hand and make it look convincing and he is much more creative than Ronaldo

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
what the hell I have always thought Messi is better stop making crappy judgements based on me agreeing with Tim twice, which is only once more than agreeing with him one time. And what would happen if I said Ronaldo? "Oi Max stop agreeing with me!" What am I meant to say? Both are equal and soccer wins on the day? Sod off, Messi rules

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
hahaha max explosion. I actually agree with you tim, i much prefer Messi as a viewing prospect and as a player. However this is not about who is the better entertainer, I maintain that when one is choosing the player of the year one has to rely to some degree on stats, and for a forward/midfielder such as Messi and Ronaldo goals do come into play. Thus Ronaldo had a far better year, and thus, in my opinion deserves to get the award. Not to say that in the future he will be a better player than Messi, in actuallity I believe he will have a terrible year next year as his heart is not in the game, he wants to be at Madrid. But as the award is based on the years play he deserves it as a result of his prolific goal scoring and his equal skill level to Messi.

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
This thread is about choosing between Messi and Ronaldo, and if I had a choice between a player who scored 100 goals in four games and a player who scored 1 goal in 106 games but was exciting and creative I would definitley choose the exciting and creative guy. (Messi of course)

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
max do you read? The post is for the BEST, not the most exciting player. If the best player in the world was decided by excitement Paul Robinson, Marlon Harewood, and Joey Barton would be in the running. A cricketing equivalent is Chris Martin woudl win, he is very fun to watch, however is a far worse batsman than Ponting.

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
Yeah but football is called the beautiful game for a reason (well many but...) and for me creativity can't be measured, and the expression of it is one of the most if not the most important factor of the game, therefore I will rate a creative yet inconsistent player (Zlatan Ibrahimovic) over a consistent bore (Nicolas Anelka) anyday.BrynJ_SE7 wrote:max do you read? Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
Anelka is anything but consistant, and i agree with you up to a point. However in the case of the player of the world one cannot soley look at 'creativity' in your sense of the word.

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
Anelka has been brutally consistent this year, lots of standard goals. How else can you look at creativity?

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
creativity can only really be officially measured in goals otherwise it becomes too subjective.
since i don't think the amount of goals someone scores is a good measure of creativity i then judge in my own subjective way.
which leads to the truth that messi is the best player in the world.

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
Creativity cannot be measured in goals otherwise Anelka is the most "creative" player in the premier league!
Creativity cannot be measured
you either have it or you don't!
Ibrahimovic has proven that he has it
Anelka has not

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
I maintain Anelka is not consistant, he has underperformed for almost his entire career, thus is somewhat inconsistant. I agree creativity cannot be measured, art cannot be called the 'best' neither can music, as it is subjective. As a result if the award was based on creativity a) they would never reach a consensus(the judge panel) and b) the only players to ever win would be attacking players, what about those players who are amazing defenders and holdind mids? Terry and Gattuso come to my mind.
In watching el classico my opinion of Messi has risen, i believe he will become a ledgend of football, however i maintain that looking at the player of the year, Ronaldo; will and should recieve it.
What struck me as especially poignent was the way the Madrid defenders reacted to the threat of Messi, be very physical and attempt to dominate him, it is a testement to the skill of the player that he still managed to have such an impact on the game, inspite of the pressure he was under.

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
Anelka is consistent, he is a real threat for lower teams and absent in big matches. He has been clinical like this his whole career. He exploits weaker backlines.
<Yuss someone finally recognised Terry's creative genius!><but seriously you should add Puyol to that list>

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
I was making an example, but i agree that Anelka has played well this year, but previously he has been one of the games biggest underperformers, he has had a combined transfer fee of 90odd million pounds, and has not shown the corresponding class. For a player who has had the most money spent on them in history one would expect the player to be the best in the world. This is not the case.

Re: Messi or Ronaldo?
well in defence of him having the most money spent on him he has played at four other premier league clubs as well as PSG and Fenerbahce in between, so 90 divided by 7 or how ever many big clubs he's played at ends up just more than 11 million each time
